Why Succulent Terrariums?

How to Make a Succulent Terrarium: A Step-by-Step Guide - Verdure Studio, Massachusetts

Succulents are popular because they are hardy, require minimal maintenance, and are perfect for indoor environments. A terrarium, on the other hand, creates a controlled environment for these plants, ensuring they get the right amount of water and light. By creating your own succulent terrarium, you can design a beautiful mini garden that brings a touch of nature indoors.

Succulent terrariums can be customized in a variety of ways, depending on the size, shape, and style you choose for your container. They can be tailored to fit the aesthetic of your home, office, or even for special events. The possibilities are endless, and best of all, they are easy to care for, making them an ideal plant for beginners.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Your Own Succulent Terrarium

What You'll Need:

Before you start creating your succulent terrarium, gather the following materials:

  1. Glass Container: Choose a glass container that is 6 inches in size. A fishbowl, vase, or jar will work well.

  2. Gritty Rocks: A well-draining mix of small, gritty rocks to support succulent growth.

  3. Succulent Plants: Select a mix of succulents with different colors and textures.

  4. Decorative Elements: Optional, but can include small figurines, colored stones, or sand.

  5. Tweezers & Tools: Tweezers for precise placement, along with a small stick or tool to help adjust the succulents.

  6. Succulent Fertilizer: Used to lightly water the terrarium after planting.

Step 1: Prepare Your Container

Clean your glass container to remove any dust or residue. A clean container ensures a healthy environment for your succulents.

Step 2: Add the Gritty Rocks

Fill about two-thirds of the container with your gritty rock mix. This provides structure for the succulents and ensures excess moisture doesn't get trapped.

Step 3: Prepare the Succulents

Before planting, remove any soil from the succulents, exposing their root balls. Also, remove any dead leaves from the base of the plants. This helps prevent rot and gives your terrarium a cleaner look.

Step 4: Add the Succulents

Place the succulents into the container, positioning them as desired. Bury them slightly in the rocks to anchor them.

Step 5: Arrange and Adjust

Once the succulents are placed, fill in the remaining spaces with additional gritty rocks to secure them. Use tweezers to remove loose rocks from the leaves and carefully adjust the placement for an aesthetically pleasing design.

Step 6:  Add Decorations

Personalize your terrarium by adding decorative elements such as small figurines, colored pebbles, or sand to enhance the overall look.

Step 7: Lightly Water with Succulent Fertilizer

Using a spray bottle or watering can, lightly water your succulents with a diluted succulent fertilizer. Watch as the rocks change into a vibrant color when they absorb moisture!

Step 8: Find the Right Spot

Place your terrarium in a bright, sunny location. Ideally, direct sunlight is best, but at minimum, position it in an area with bright indirect light.

Step 9: Continued Care

  • Watering: Water every 2-3 weeks, only when the leaves look crinkly. Avoid overwatering, as there is no drainage.

  • Growth Management: Over time, succulents will become big and bushy, sometimes growing tall and leggy (about 1 year). When they outgrow the container, remove them, take off the lower leaves (which can be used for leaf propagation), and trim the stems to 2 inches. Replant in the same container, wait a week before watering, and continue care as usual. Expect some crinkling or lower leaf loss at first—it will adjust and regrow roots in time.
